How Do I ♥ My Slow Cooker…
….let me count the ways! 😉
-I ♥ how many types of recipes I can make in it.
-I ♥ how I can “set it and forget it” and free up time to do something else.
-I ♥ the oh-so-tasty and consistently good results.
-I ♥ that it’s energy efficient.
-I ♥ that foods cooked in a slow cooker are often healthier than when using other types of cooking methods.
– I love cooking once and enjoy twice. There’s usually plenty of yummy leftovers.
the list goes on and on!
Here’s my review of the Hamilton Beach 6 QT. slow cooker that I use all the time, pictured above. 🙂
And some of my fav slow cooker recipes for you to enjoy too!
-Moroccan Vegetable Stew with Fragrant Orange Basmati Rice (from the Groovy Green Kitchen Volume I)
-Southern Nights Slow Cooker Veggie-Sausage Gumbo(sample recipe from the Groovy Green Kitchen II)
PS: I’m on the home stretch for the Groovy Green Kitchen II! Will be available at Amazon by the end of February. 🙂
Do you have a slow cooker? Do you ♥ yours too? Any fav recipes to share?
Happy SLOW Cooking! 😉
Yummy (and healthier) Holiday Recipe Suggestions :<)
It’s not always easy to think “healthier choices” when it comes to holiday recipes.
But it doesn’t have to be ALL bad either. 😉
Here’s a round-up of holiday-ready recipes from the Veggie…archives that I hope you will enjoy.
This oh, so yummy hummus recipe was a winner in a recipe contest, here at Veggies, Yarns & Tails, a few years ago.
Delicious with crudité, tortilla chips, pitas…great on wraps too.
And what a gorgeous bright orange color to add to your holiday table.
Who needs additive-laden commercial party mix, when it’s so easy to make it in the slow cooker?
Pick and choose your fav ingredients and leave out what you don’t want. This is by far, the best party mix I have ever tasted.
Fill up a pretty jar, add the recipe on a ribbon tie and it makes a great hostess gift too. 🙂
Kasha and Beet Salad with Celery and Feta
This is one of my all-time fav marinated salads.
Oh, so delish and colorful too. Gluten-free is an added bonus.
A great potluck or buffet table addition.
What could be better after a day at the rink or skiing, than a hot and spicy bowl of black bean soup?
This is my version of this classic, comfort soup.
Makes a crowd-pleasing and oh so satisfying “meal in a bowl”. 😉
Mushroom Stroganoff with Herbed Pasta
My redo of this classic, oh so rich and yummy main dish. Lower in fat and no meat required!
If you are a meat-eater, you won’t miss the beef, I promise. 😉
And if you already ♥ mushrooms like I do, this is definitely one you’ll enjoy.
Makes a quick and elegant main dish, perfect for a holiday supper.
This luscious Berry Cobbler recipe is courtesy of the Veggie Table.
Lower in sugar than a lot of cobbler recipes. I sub Earth Balance for the butter and use buttermilk, not cream.
A nice dessert to make when you’ve got supper in the oven and want something sweet to finish a meal.
I make mine with organic frozen mixed berries (so convenient) and top with a scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt. Yumm…

Happy Cooking and Happy Holidays! 🙂
Party Mix…from a Slow-Cooker? Yes Indeed!
***MADE ANOTHER BATCH OF THIS SLOW COOKER PARTY MIX RECENTLY AND THOUGHT I’D SHARE THE RECIPE/POST AGAIN, HERE AT VEGGIES. ***
IT’S SO GOOD AND SO EASY TO MAKE IN THE SLOW COOKER!
HAPPY COOKING. :>)
As any of my regular readers already know, I am a big fan and recent convert to using a Slow-Cooker for all kinds of main dishes, stews and soups.
But did you know that you can use a Slow-Cooker for making recipes like: granola and party-mix too?
Well I didn’t until I recently received a copy of Robin Robertson’s: Fresh From the Vegan Slow-Cooker as a gift.
After scanning through all the great recipes in this new cookbook, I knew I’d have to give the: Life of the Party Mixa try first. It came out great! So delish and not too salty (great to be able to control that when you make this mix at home).

Some minor tweaks I made:

Some minor tweaks I made:
After the initial 2 hours on high heat, I found the texture to be just right and the flavours well-developed, so I stopped the cooking process and just let the mix cool completely before storing. Not that it was stored long! The photo above is from Flickr ’cause I didn’t manage a photo here before it was all gone LOL. 😉
A couple of other things: I omitted the onion powder and cayenne and bumped up the Tabasco to 1 teaspoon. I didn’t add any salt as the nuts and pretzels I used were salted.
If you’re starting to think about party fare with the holidays just around the corner, you should definitely give this recipe a try. And what a great way to use your slow-cooker! 🙂
See page 2 for complete recipe.
