Blog of the Week: I Hate Cilantro

As a cilantro-hater, welllll….maybe that’s too harsh a word, cilantro- disliker…. LOL  🙂  that’s better, but starting to be ok with SMALL amounts, well-incorporated in other foods, I really got a kick out of browsing this site. These people mean business! They are confirmed cilantro-haters. Their stories are varied but all agree, cilantro is a food item to be feared and avoided at all costs!!!

My own cilantro story happened at a Chapter’s book- signing. I had brought a sample tray of goodies for shoppers to try while taking a look at my cookbook. A recipe that has always been a hit at book- signings and demos is my, Hummus with a Twist. People were standing around, paging through copies of my cookbook and happily munching on crackers and hummus. One man came up to the table and instead of saying anything or looking at a book or eating, just kept staring at the crackers and hummus, a look of fear in his eyes!!!

Finally….after several minutes, I had to ask him if something was the matter. He gravely pointed to the food tray and boomed, ‘ Those green specks in the hummus, are they CILANTRO????  I HATE cilantro, even the smell of cilantro grosses me out, I can’t even stand having it in the fridge. ‘ And on and on and on he ranted……Other people started looking at him in a strange way, then put their heads down and went back to checking out books. He went on with his tale of cilantro woe, apparently he had (horror of horrors!) unknowingly married a cilantro-LOVER!!!  Wow, talk about opposites attracting .

I was happy to tell him, the ‘green specks’ were lovely fresh rosemary….He quickly grabbed a hummus-coated cracker, picked up (and bought) my cookbook and soon was on his way to the checkout line. Now there was a man who needed to know about the I Hate Cilantro site…I truly hope that he finds this great support group. Perhaps they will be able to help him cope with his ‘problem’ ….but never to forget the insensitive  remarks, those who have openly mocked him, unable to understand the depths of his food despair…..

For everyone else,  in need of a laugh or two, check out their wonderful wacky site at:

  1. Wow, I thought I was the only person on earth who didn’t like cilantro! Whew, what a relief to know I’m not alone. Thanks for sharing.

  2. You are certainly not alone Jennifer…I Hate Cilantro already has hundreds of members and imagine all the cilantro-haters who are not aware of this support group, so helpful for serious cases….. LOL 🙂

  3. This was so funny–thanks for the morning laugh! And I LOVE cilantro, just love it. But I do hate strawberry ice cream that is pink, all artificial sweeteners, banana pudding, and most commercial potato salads (my mom’s is the BEST).

  4. Good Morning Kim…. You LOVE Cilantro??? Better stay clear of that blog LOL…

I agree re: the strawberry ice cream, one of the gross ‘food’ items of all time..even as a kid, I hated it. Fav. ice cream??? I think pistaschio, for the taste and color…the good kind, with nuts and fruit blended in, yummmmy.

Pudding, another gross one, the J E L L O kind from a box…we had too many of those when I was growing up.

Potato salad, some good, some bad but NO hard-boiled eggs PLLLLEASE, now that is my all time ‘gross me out’ food, I can’t even have a plate near me, with one of them on it, yuuuuggghhh….Second gross choice, parsnips, probably the only veggie I don’t like.

Any more ‘gross foods’ to share out there???

    Have a great day, G 🙂

  6. Go ahead and add me to your blog list Geraldine.
Always nice to have someone read my babble…LOL 🙂

  7. Hi Jamie and Caroline…hope you are both having great days.

    Brussels sprouts and mushrooms yummmmm…..
Sunny or poached eggs ptthp, ptthp, ptthp…..like that sound, I can hear it Caroline LOL

    BFN, G 🙂

  8. Thank you so much for posting this link. I cannot stand cilantro – the merest speck will ruin any food for me. My husband thinks I’m nuts – now I’ll be able to show him I’m not alone. 🙂

  9. You certainly are NOT Laura….Its actually the smell of cilantro that I really can’t stand, isn’t that the weirdest??? LOL When its mixed with other ingredients in a dish and just a small amount, I can stomach it if I have to. We go to one restaurant here, they have a very good Lucky Rice Bowl that I have recently found out has some cilantro in it. Must have been only a bit!

Thanks for stopping by, BFN, G 🙂

  10. […] I don’t understand it, but some people don’t like cilantro…heathens. […]

  11. Well said. I would be happy to read anything else you might contribute on this subject.
