Prevention Magazine-What happened to you???

This morning’s “pile” in the inbox included a gem from the News Target site, re: Prevention magazine. 

Strange but true, only yesterday, I had returned a subscription offer to Prevention with the comment, “no thanks, too many drug ads”.

What a difference 20 or so years can make! I can remember my parents subscribing to this little magazine many years ago when I was still at home and  attending  high school. Even then, health and related topics were of interest to me and I would often read Prevention from cover to cover, it was that interesting. And, best of all, it really WAS about prevention in those days, staying healthy without drugs and other medical procedures. There was a big emphasis on herbal remedies, whole foods, exercise, staying healthy, not managing disease. And the ads that were included, were definitely in keeping with their philosophy and vision for their well-respected publication.  

Unfortunately, Prevention magazine has, in the past few year, sold out it seems, in pursuit of the almighty dollar. The magazine is now a mixed bag of health related article, interspersed generously with one drug ad after another. Sad but true.

I am sure I am not the only former Prevention reader who feels this way but unfortunately, they don’t seem to be looking at adding to their revenues with more health-PROMOTING ads and companies selling products along these lines. Surely there would be enough out there now, to take the place of the drug ads. So long Prevention, I won’t be back until you take a long hard look at your priorities.   1. Yes, I agree. They need to get their priorities staight. Play with fire, get burned. They did it to themselves. It started to be all about the buck and less, much less, about health. So sad.

  3. If you look at the history of Prevention magazine, which is really a mirror for the larger history of American journalism, you see that what’s happend to Prevention is not unusual. Prevention was started in 1950 by the venerable Rodale company, the gurus of organic gardening. The company headed by JI Rodale founded Organic Gardening magazine in 1942. JI Rodale was an organic gardening and farming pioneer. Rodale is still family owned but they have grown to be a publishing company, not a magazine publisher.

    According to their website, Prevention is now the 12th largest magazine in the country and reaches 10.5 million readers/month. Therein lies the problem. They have a big readership and it’s too tempting to convert that into ad dollars, end of story. It’s why every time you turn on the TV, there’s a picture of a beautiful dead/missing/distressed white woman. Those stories get viewers and viewers=ad dollars. It’s what’s killing American journalism in general. RIP, American media.

I also remember when the senior Rodale was at the helm and how he must be turning over in his grave now, watching his magazine in such a state. A sad story, that’s for sure. Lot’s of selling out it seems recently, Tom’s of Maine just bought up by Colgate, another first of the health food store brands that I remember, again MORE $$$’s were more important than what their co. stood for.   5. yeah, the old dude is spinning circles in his grave for sure. So sad about Tom’s…but I was thinking about it….really, can you blame them? It was something like a US$63M sale…they’re set for life and they’re (Tom & Kate) in their early 60s. They probably have busted their butts doing nothing but work since they founded the company. Oh well…the perils of capitalism.

  6. I don’t think when they sold their business that they were struggling for money, they were millionaires already, a couple times over at least. It would have nice if they at least had sold to a co. a bit more in line with their own (at least originally) ideals.

  7. Sigh, Veggie Guy, that’s definitely true. I guess any company that could give them the big bucks is probably not in line with their original values. Think about all the “local” New England companies that have gone this road Ben&Jerry’s (Unilever), Stonyfield Farms (Group Danone/Dannon), Nantucket Nectars (Cadbury Schweppes).

  8. I also liked the old Prevention alot, and hate the new one. I feel it began to go down hill after Robert Rodales death in 1990. He did good job continuing the mag after his father JI Rodale died in 1971. I don’t buy the new Prevention anymore, but instead have been buyinh all the old back issues, even back to 50’s ! They are all interesting reading , even today. The new one is not. I feel they keep their high readershp because they do have the latest on the best ways to lose weight and stay slim. In fact almost ever issue that seems to be the main theme now. Many americans are overweight, so it does fill that need. But it’s not the same type of mag it was in the 50’s , 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

    Perhaps if enough ‘flak’ gets back to the new editors/owners (I don’t think a Rodale is at the helm now, correct? Just a short article from RR wife at the end of the mag.) they may rethink their choices for advertisers. God knows, there’s plenty of ethical, health-promoting companies that they could fill their ad pages with, not one drug ad after another, as it is now. 😦
